“Darling Mother” questioned the social status, working-class, family role and self-identity of women in the form of dance theatre. This production tries to describe the situation of some women in today’s society, to interpret the theme of “female subjectivity”.
This dance delves into the physical experiences, suppressed emotions, and passions of women, portraying their journey towards what appears to be a predetermined fate. Through daily body movements, it reflects on the essence of womanhood. The choreography embodies the evolution of women’s bodies, minds, identities, and their sources of discipline. It explores the unique physical milestones of womanhood such as breast development, menstruation, and pregnancy, while delving into the constraints and bonds of maternal love.
Through simplicity and tranquility, my costume design aims to leave room for performers to dynamically inhabit the space. The mother’s portrayal in gray symbolizes the toll of repetitive housework on her youth and beauty, while the children’s attire draws inspiration from the carnation’s stem, a global symbol of Mother’s Day. Defined by delicate lace, soft silk, modest shirts, bubble sleeves, slits, and children’s saliva towels, the design incorporates elements of traditional Taiwanese kitchen tablecloths as collage material.
