The Captive Peacock

"Peacock, as big as a goose and has long legs, has mottled hair.
Catch it and pet it. Clap your hands and it will dance.” -Yiwu Zhi

「孔雀,其大如大雁而足高,毛皆有斑紋彩,捕而蓄之,拍手即舞。」
《異物志》

The Captive Peacock is inspired by Irving Penn’s splint concept and Cindy Sherman’s cinematic visual atmosphere, combined with the image of the peacock in Yiwu Zhi (異物誌, Record of Foreign Matters), using the splint to limit the movement range of the model, just like the captive peacock, which has a smart and gorgeous appearance but nowhere to release, trying to create a story-telling visual feeling with color, emotion and lighting atmosphere.

Soft lighting with rich and saturated colors was used to make a balance between strengthening visual contrast and subject’s repressed emotion.

We hope to guide the viewer into the space we created
and try to understand the sense of being bound by limitations.

Qipao

Qipao became a trend in Shanghai at the time. Fashionable, upper-class women put them on one after another.

Under the gorgeous appearance, women began to have a sense of equal rights but still failed to break away from the cage of traditional identity and get stuck in the old-fashioned marriage customs.

The white and gold colour highlights her newness and beauty, the flowery embroidery adds splendour and delicacy, and the edging highlights her limited fragility.
